Materials:
Worsted weight yarn in the following colors:

Other Materials Needed:

2 large buttons

stuffing
No. 7 knitting needles and a No. 6-G crochet hook (American) or any size that gives the correct gauge.
(Canadian sizes: Knitting needles No. 6 and crochet hook No. 7)
(Metric sizes:  Knitting needles No. 5.00 and crochet hook No. 4.50)

Gauge:  10 stitches and 14 rows = 2" measured over stockinette stitches



Abbreviations:

k - knit;  p - purl;  st - stitch;  sts - stitches;  rep - repeat;  beg - begin or beginning;  inc - increase or increasing;  dec - decrease or decreasing;  ins - inches;  gm - gram;  cm - centimeter;  m - meter;  st st - stocking or stockinette stitch;  M.C. - main color;  C.C. - contrast color;  sl - slip;  p.s.s.o - pass slip stitch over;  tog - together;  rem - remain.


Raggedy Andy Doll:
First side of Leg:  (Make 2)  Using Black and beg at shoe, cast on 12 sts.  Work in garter st (every row k) for 8 rows.  Next row:  k 2 tog, k 10.  Next row: k 5, (k 2 tog) 3 times - 8 sts.  Work 3 rowns even in garter st.  **Change to red and work in st st (1 row k, 1 row p).   Change to white and work 2 rows in st st.  NOTE:  Carry yarn not in use up along side of work.  Continue to work 2 rows of red and 2 rows of white alternately until there are 30 rows in all ending with a red stripe.  Continuing with white only, inc one st at a each end of next row - 10 sts.   Next row:  P.  Cast off. **

Second side of Leg:  (Make 2)  Using Black, cast on 12 sts and work 8 rows of garter st.  Next row:  k 10, k 2 tog.  Next row:  (k 2 tog) 3 times, k to end - 8 sts.  Work 3 rows in garter st.  Now work same as for first side of leg from ** to **..

Body:  (Make 2)  Using White, cast on 20 sts.  Work 36 rows in st st.  Neck:  Next row:  (k 2 tog) 10 times - 10 sts.   Work even for 3 rows.  Head:  Continuing in st st,  inc one st at each end of next row and every alternate row until there are 20 sts on the needle.  Work 9 rows even.  Now dec one st at each end of next row and every alternate row until 12 sts rem.  Next Row:  (P 2 tog) 6 times.  Cast off.

Arms:  (Make 2)  Using white, cast on 14 sts and work in st st for 20 rows.  To Shape Hand:  Next row:  K 3, k 2 tog, k 4, k 2 tog, k 3.  Next row:  P 3, p 2 tog, p 2, p 2 tog, p 3 - 10 sts.  Next row:  K 4, inc one st in each of next 2 sts, k 4.  To Form thumb: Next row:  P 4, inc one st in each of next 4 sts, p 4 - 16 sts.  Next row:  K .  Next row:  P 4, (p 2 tog) 4 times, p 4 - 12 sts.  Next row:  K.  Next row:   *P 1, p 2, tog, rep from * across - 8 sts.  Next row:  K.  Cast off purlwise. Continuing in st st, inc one st at each end of next row and every alternate row until there are 20 sts on the needle.  Work 9 rows even.  Now, dec one st at each end of next row and every alternate row until 12 sts rem.  

To Complete:  Place body and head pieces together with right sides facing.  Sew together leaving bottom edge open.  Turn, stuff firmly.  Sew  bottom closed.   Trace face pattern onto tissue paper.  Pin tissue pattern on face area and embroider features  through  tissue using yarn.  Outline eyes with black yarn and work lashes in zig zag pattern.  Outline nose and lips with red yarn.  Work eyebrows and smile lines with black yarn.  Tear away tissue carefully.  Fill in eyes with black yarn and satin stitch.  Fill in nose and mouth with red yarn and satin stitch.

Hair:  Using a 2 yd (2 m) piece of Orange yarn, thread needle double.  With doll facing you, work first row of hair just forward of seam line around face and fill in back of head.  1.  Pull yarn through head leaving ends  1 in (2.5 cm) long.  2.  Take a second st in same place and pull up tightly.  3.  Take a third st just above last st and pull yarn through to make a loop 1 in (2.5 cm) long.  Continue in this manner, rep step 2 and 3.  Rep with additional yarn to fill in the back of the head above the neckline.  Cut through all loops and trim ends. 

Fold arms in half with right sides together and sew seams, leaving upper edge open.  Turn  and stuff firmly.  Sew closed.  Sew arm to body at shoulder with thumb forward and seam in back.  Sew 1 frist and 1 second side of legs together with right sides facing, being sure to match stripes carefully.  Turn and stuff firmly.  Sew in place at bottom of body making sure toe points toward front of doll.


Raggedy Ann Doll:
First side of Leg:  (Make 2)  Work same as for Raggedy Andy until 18 rows of leg above shoe are completed (5 red stripes and 4 white stripes).  Next row:  Continuing with white only, k and inc one st at each end of next row - 10 sts.  Work even in garter st for 21 rows for pantaloon legs.  Cast off.
2nd side of leg:  (Make 2)  Work same as for Raggedy Andy until shoe is completed, then finish same as for first side of leg until 21 rows of garter st are completed.  Cast off. 

Body:  (Make 2)  Using white, cast on 20 sts.  Work in garter st for 22 rows for pantaloons. 
Upper Body:  Change to st st and work even for 14 rows.  Complete neck and head same as for Raggedy Andy.

Arms:  (Make 2)  Using white, work same as for Raggedy Andy. 

To Complete:  Assemble Raggedy Ann doll same as for Raggedy Andy.

Clothes:
Andy's Shirt Front:  Using Red, cast on 24 sts.  Work even in st st for 14 rows.  **Sleeve and Shoulder Shaping:  Continuing in st st, but  cast on 10 sts at beg of next 2 rows - 44 sts.  Work even in st st for 12 rows.  Cast off 12 sts at beg of next 2 rows - 20 sts.  Change to blue and work 2 rows in garter st.  Cast off. **
Andy's Shirt Back:  Work same as front to sleeve shaping.  Cast on 10 sts at beg. of next row.  Divide for Neck opening.  Next row:  k 22 sts.  Place these sts on st holder for right sleeve and shoulder, k across last 12 sts.  Next row:  Cast on 10 sts, work to end.  Work even in st st for 13 rows.  Next row:  cast off 12 sts, work to end - 10 sts.  **Change to blue and work 2 rows garter st.  Cast off.**  Right Sleeve and Shoulder:  Place sts from holder on needle with wrong side facing.  Using Red, work across row.  Work even in st st for 12 rows.  Next row:  Cast off 12 sts, work to end.  Next row:  P.  Now work from ** to **.

To Complete:  With right sides together, sew shoulder seams.  With right side facing and using Blue, pick up and k 20 sts along each armhole edge.  K 1 row.  Cast off.  Sew underarm and side seams.  Sew a snap at top of back opening.  With crochet hook and blue yarn, make a chain about 8 in (20.5 cm) long.  Tie into bow and sew to center front of shirt, just below necklind.

Andy's Pants:  (Make 2)  Using Blue and beg at waist, cast on 26 sts.  Work even in st st for 20 rows.  Inc one st at each end of next 2 rows - 30 sts.  (Crotch Point)  Work even for 8 rows.  Dec one st at each end of next row.  Work 3 rows even.  Dec one st at each end of next row.  Work 5 rows even.  Cast off.

To Complete:  With right sides together, sew seams for center front and back from waist to crotch point.  Refold to form 2 legs ans sew leg seams.  Turn.  Sew 2 large buttons at front waistline and 2 smaller buttons at lower side of each leg.

Andy's Hat:  Beg at brim and using White, cast on 45 sts.  Work in garter st for 7 rows.  Next row:  P.  Next row:   K.  Next row:  P.  Change to blue and work in st st for 2 rows.  Next row:  (Right side)  *K 3, k 2, tog, rep from * across - 36 sts.  Work 3 rows even.  Next row:  *K 2, k 2 tog, rep from * across - 27 sts.  Work 3 rows even.  Next row:  *K 1, k 2 tog, rep from * across - 18 sts.  Next row:  *P 2 tog, rep from * across - 9 sts.  Break yarn, leaving end long enough to sew seam.  Gather stitches tightly and fasten securely.  Sew seam making sure that brim seam is sewn on right side so seam will be hidden when brim is turned up.  Turn up brim and tack hat to head.

Ann's Dress Front:  Using Blue, cast on 48 sts and work in garter st for 4 rows.  Change to Red and work in st st for 18 rows.  Next row: *K 2 tog, rep from * across - 24 sts.  Continuing in st st, work even for 11 rows. Complete as for Andy's shirt front from ** to **.

Ann's Dress Back:  Work same as for dress front to Sleeve and Shoulder Shaping.  Finish same as Andy's shirt back from Sleeve and Shoulder Shaping, but omitting bow tie.

Ann's Apron:   Using White, cst on 36 sts.  Work in garter st for 5 rows.  Change to st st and work even for 16 rows.  Next row:  *K 2 tog, rep from * across - 18 sts.  Change to garter st and work 5 rows for waistband.  Change to st st and beg with a k row, work even for 9 rows.  Next row:  (wrong side)  K, cast off.  DO NOT BREAK YARN.  Insert crochet hook into loop of last st and crochet a chain long enough to go around neck and back to other side of apron top.  Break yarn and sew in place.  Attach yarn at waist and crochet a chain 9 in (23 cm) long for back tie.  Rep on other side of apron for second tie.
